At some point in our Christian walk, we may experience moments when our faith feels shaken. This can happen when prayers seem unanswered, situations don’t change, or we battle with emotions of doubt and frustration. In these moments, traditional spiritual activities such as praying, speaking in tongues, or fasting might not seem to immediately lift the weight. Instead, we must take intentional, actionable steps to restore our faith and stand firm in God’s truth.
1. Assess and Acknowledge How You Feel
Faith is not the absence of emotions; rather, it is trusting God despite them. The first step in restoring faith is to honestly assess what you are feeling and why. Ask yourself:
What exactly am I struggling with?
Is it unanswered prayers, disappointment, or external circumstances?
What am I perceiving about God in this moment?
Practical Step: Write down your emotions in a journal. This helps to identify patterns and observe where the enemy may be planting lies. Once written, compare your thoughts to scripture to see where truth needs to replace falsehood.
David frequently assessed his emotions before God, as seen in Psalm 42:5: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Acknowledging your emotions allows you to gain clarity and move forward.
2. Seek God’s Perspective Over Your Feelings
Our feelings are valid, but they should not dictate our faith. Feelings fluctuate, but God's Word remains unchanging. Meditate on scriptures that reinforce the truth of God’s character and His promises:
Isaiah 55:8-9 – “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.”
Numbers 23:19 – “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind.”
Romans 8:28 – “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Practical Step: Speak God’s Word out loud over your situation. When doubts arise, counter them with scripture. For example, if you feel abandoned, declare Hebrews 13:5 – “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
3. Ask God for Grace to Remain Steadfast
Faith is not about striving but about reliance on God’s grace. When struggling, ask God for grace to be stable in faith.
2 Corinthians 12:9 – “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Jude 1:24 – “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy.”
Practical Step: Pray a simple, heartfelt prayer such as: “Lord, I cannot do this on my own. Strengthen me by Your grace and keep my heart steadfast in You.” Write this prayer down and revisit it daily.
4. Take Intentional Steps to Build Your Faith
Faith requires action. When faith is weak, take small but consistent steps to strengthen it:
Feed on God’s Word Daily – “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)
Surround Yourself with Faith-Building Community – “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Recall Past Testimonies – “Forget not all His benefits.” (Psalm 103:2)
Speak God’s Word Over Your Life – “Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’” (Joel 3:10)
Practical Step: Keep a “Faith Journal” where you document testimonies, scriptures, and words from God. Reviewing these in difficult moments will remind you of God’s faithfulness.
5. Make a Decision to Trust God Because He Said It
Faith is not just about feelings or experiences; it is a decision to trust God simply because He is God. Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” Even when we do not see results, faith means trusting God’s Word above all else.
Practical Step: Write down a personal declaration of faith. Example: “Lord, I trust You. Even when I don’t understand, I choose to believe in Your goodness and promises.” Read this aloud daily to reaffirm your trust in God.
Conclusion: Stand Firm and Keep Moving Forward
If your faith has been shaken, do not stay in that place. Acknowledge your feelings, seek God’s truth, ask for grace, take steps to build your faith, and choose to trust God. The enemy wants you to give up, but God desires that you stand firm.
Be encouraged by Galatians 6:9 – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Keep pressing forward, and God will strengthen you in due time!
