What Does Consecration Mean? Consecration is the act of setting oneself apart for God’s purposes. In the Bible, the Hebrew word for consecrate, “qadash” (קַדֵּשׁ) , means to sanctify, dedicate, or make holy. It involves a deliberate decision to live in alignment with God’s will and to purify oneself from anything that hinders spiritual growth. In Joshua 3:5 , Joshua told the Israelites: “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” (NIV) Before crossing the Jordan River into the Promised Land, the Israelites had to consecrate themselves as a preparation for witnessing God’s mighty works. This concept of preparation through consecration remains relevant today as believers seek a deeper relationship with God and His divine purpose.
