In the Bible, we see many examples of God’s people facing curses and opposition but ultimately standing firm in their faith. One of the most powerful examples is found in the story of Balaam and the Israelites in the book of Numbers.
Balaam, a prophet for hire, was summoned by Balak, the king of Moab, to curse the Israelites as they journeyed to the Promised Land. Balak was terrified of the Israelites, who had grown in number and strength. He believed that if Balaam cursed them, it would weaken their power. However, as Balaam sought the Lord, he received a shocking revelation: "How can I curse whom God has not cursed?" (Numbers 23:8).
Despite Balak’s attempts to manipulate the situation and persuade Balaam to curse the Israelites, God intervened. Balaam ultimately proclaimed, "Behold, I received a command to bless: He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it" (Numbers 23:20). Balaam could not curse those whom God had blessed, emphasizing a profound truth: the anointed of the Lord cannot be cursed.

As believers today, we need to understand that we are also the anointed of the Lord. Just as the Israelites were protected from Balaam's curses, we, too, have the assurance of God's protection over our lives. Galatians 3:13 reassures us, "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us..." Through His sacrifice, we are shielded from the consequences of sin and any curses directed toward us.
However, many of us may still experience manifestations of curses in our lives, which can manifest as negative family patterns, persistent health issues, financial struggles, or broken relationships. These signs can indicate that we are facing spiritual opposition.
Recognizing Curses in Your Life
Awareness is crucial in identifying and breaking free from these patterns. Here are some signs to watch for:
- Recurrent Issues: Look for patterns in your life that seem to repeat across generations, such as divorce, addiction, or illness.
- Unexplained Misfortune: Situations where you consistently encounter obstacles or setbacks without apparent cause.
- Family Patterns: Negative traits or cycles that seem to affect multiple family members may signify a spiritual issue that needs addressing.
The Authority to Reverse Curses
As children of God, we possess the authority to break these curses. In Luke 10:19, Jesus assures us, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you." This authority empowers us to confront and dismantle any negative influence in our lives.
To reclaim the blessings that are rightfully ours, we should:
Acknowledge God’s Provision: Understand that God has provided for our protection and blessing through Christ. Psalm 91:10 promises, "No evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent."
Pray and Declare: Use the authority you have in Christ to speak against any curses. Pray earnestly, declaring God’s promises over your life. Isaiah 54:17 states, "No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment."
Live in Faith: Embrace your identity as a child of God. Ephesians 1:3 reminds us that we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.

Believers, you are not defenseless against spiritual attacks. Just as the Israelites were protected by God’s blessing through Balaam’s story, you too can stand firm in the assurance of your identity as a child of God. Curses cannot touch you when you declare your faith and stand upon His Word.
