Tapping into the Anointing: The Power of Faith and Spiritual Legacy

In the life of Elisha, we see a profound lesson on the power of spiritual inheritance and the transfer of anointing from one servant of God to another. When Elisha took up the mantle of Elijah, he demonstrated not only his faith in God but also his understanding of the spiritual authority that can be passed from one individual to another. His cry, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” (2 Kings 2:14), echoed his deep desire to experience the same power that had rested upon Elijah.

Elisha’s request for a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit (2 Kings 2:9) reveals his ambition for greater effectiveness in his ministry. This passage, and others like it, show that believers can tap into the anointing on a man or woman of God to receive empowerment for their own lives and ministries.

Biblical Examples of Tapping into Anointing

  1. Moses and Joshua:

    • Scripture: Numbers 27:18-20
    • After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, God instructed him to lay hands on Joshua, indicating a transfer of leadership and anointing. This impartation of the Spirit enabled Joshua to lead effectively into the Promised Land.
  2. Samuel and Saul:

    • Scripture: 1 Samuel 10:1
    • The prophet Samuel anointed Saul as king, pouring oil over his head. This act symbolized the transfer of God’s authority and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit for leadership.
  3. Samuel and David:

    • Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:13
    • Samuel anointed David with oil, and from that day forward, the Spirit of the Lord came upon David. This anointing equipped David for kingship and his future battles.
  4. The Apostles and the Early Church:

    • Scripture: Acts 8:18-19
    • The apostles laid hands on new believers, imparting the Holy Spirit. This practice demonstrated the continuation of spiritual authority and anointing from the apostles to the new believers.
  5. Paul and Timothy:

    • Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:6
    • Paul reminded Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God, which was given through the laying on of hands. This illustrates the principle of impartation of spiritual gifts and authority.
  6. Jesus and His Disciples:

    • Scripture: Luke 9:1-2
    • Jesus empowered His disciples by giving them authority over demons and to heal diseases. He sent them out to preach the Kingdom of God, demonstrating that His anointing could be shared with those who followed Him.
